Why does the electric heating tube burst?

Jan 04, 2022

In June 2017, I received a call from an old customer who had been cooperating for several years. I clearly remember that she spoke to me very quickly at that time, “We recently ordered more than 10 heating tubes from yours. The root exploded, what's the matter?"

Let's take a look at the pictures of the burst pipe sent by the customer first

From the picture, it is true that there are cracks on the heating tube near the flange

I could hear that my client was very nervous at the time and didn't know how to deal with this matter. Since I have dealt with similar pipe burst problems before, I know that this should be caused by improper use by the customer.

So I said to her: "This is unlikely to be a quality problem of the electric heating tube itself. From our experience, you should be caused by dry burning the heating tube, because you are an old customer of our company. You replace the heating tubes in this batch."

I thought that the customer would be very grateful for our solution, but he did not expect the customer to say to us: "I hope you can find out the real cause of the tube burst first, instead of guessing from your experience, I will send the tube to you. Please find out the reason. In addition, the explosion of the pipe has caused great damage to our equipment, and we still don’t know the extent to which it can be repaired."

After listening to what the customer said, I was shocked, because the customer’s equipment is in the millions. If it is really our cause, the consequences will be really serious.

We received the tube from the customer the next day. The technical department, quality control department, production department and company bosses have all prepared to analyze the heating tube in the meeting room.

The technical department confirmed that the tube material and wall thickness of the heating tube are consistent with the technical requirements;

The quality control department also found the inspection report of this batch of heating tubes, and the data showed that there was no abnormality;

Judging from the current situation we know, it is still impossible to find out the exact cause of the tube burst.

While everyone was discussing, I received a call from a customer. I still remember what she said at the time: "Excuse me, we found out that our voltage was connected to the wrong voltage, and we were connected to the 380V voltage. This Our company will solve the mistakes caused by this time. Thank you for your cooperation in investigating the reasons."

Everyone was relieved at that time. Each went to work.

I was standing in the conference room thinking, although it was not our reason, my tone was really wrong at the time, and I should not guess the reason based on my own experience without analysis.

After this incident, I also summarized the reasons why the tube burst may occur;

1. The surface load of the heating tube is too large, causing the magnesium oxide powder to form carbon

2. The resistance wire heats up unevenly

3. The resistance wire is not firmly in contact with the lead rod, resulting in excessive instantaneous current

4. Incomplete drainage of moisture in the pipe produces water vapor

5. The wall thickness of the heating tube is not up to standard, and the weld is not firm

The above points are the factors that will cause the electric heating tube to burst

This time, because the customer mistakenly connected the electric heating tube with 220v voltage to 380v voltage, this will cause excessive surface load of the tube, which exceeds the range that the electric heating tube can withstand, and the heating tube continues to heat up, eventually causing the heating tube to occur burst.

The above is the content to share with you. If you have any questions about electric heating elements, you can discuss and exchange with us!
