Why do electric heating pipes explode?

Jan 24, 2023

The explosion of the electric heating pipe is caused by the bursting phenomenon when the electric heating pipe is energized, accompanied by a "boom" explosion. There are several cases of this accident every year throughout the country, and many people have been injured in the eyes.
The cause of the explosion of the electric heating pipe is nothing more than two situations, one is that the conductive medium magnesium powder (magnesium oxide) is damp, and the high temperature generated by the electricity quickly converts the water into steam and produces high pressure, thus causing an explosion. The second is that the conductive medium magnesium powder is mixed with quartz sand (SIO2), and the quartz sand expands rapidly at high temperatures, resulting in an explosion.
So, how can we identify what caused the explosion? This can be identified by several methods:
1. Test the magnesium powder to identify whether the quartz exists therein. This is a good laboratory, you can use the reagent method to identify the presence of silicon (Si) elements, and the quality supervision institutes in various places can do it.
2. The already prepared electric heating tube is driven out by drying the water in the tube, you can use an electric furnace or a professional oven, and the temperature should exceed 2000C. Because the magnesium powder in the finished electric heating tube is dense, there are almost no gaps, and the space at both ends of the tube is relatively small, and the water vapor is not easy to come out, so the drying should be heated at high temperature for at least 3 hours before it is possible to drive the moisture out, and then cool for 30 minutes to do conductive experiments. At this time, if no explosion occurs again, it means that the explosion is caused by the moisture of magnesium powder.
Other phenomena such as inclusions in the tube, insufficient material of the steel pipe, heating wire hitting the wall, excessive access voltage and other phenomena will cause the wire to be short-circuited, and the electric heating tube will be burned and damaged, or the phenomenon of rupture will occur, but it will not produce an explosion.
